Hey! I’m now half-way through my 8 days off, and its great! I started my break last tuesday, the 18th. Peter had to go bring his car into town to get it fixed (cambelt), so I gave him a ride, and then I went to Palmerston north to download survivor lol. I prepared all my things for the next day. Before leaving for New Plymouth on wednesday, I gave Pete a lift to town again so he could get his car, and so he came back home and I went straight on the road. The drive was around 3 hours, and I stoped to get some food in Wanganui. There are two ways to go to New plymouth. You can either go inland, on the right side of Mt.Egmont, or on Surf Highway 45, which follows the coastline. I decided to follow the coast, and it was a pretty nice drive. I stoped once to go see the Egmont lighthouse, but it was pretty dissapointing, as there was no road to get up close to it, you only saw it at a distance. Oh well.
Once I arrived in New Plymouth, I found a hostel that had some free beds, and I don’t know why, but I only took it for 2 nights, lol don’t ask. That night, I was reading in the common room, and I met two Canadian girls, one from BC and the other from Saskatchewan. We chated a while, and then we decided to play a board game. There were a few choices, but we went for monopoly, New Zealand edition lol. It was really fun, and I know it isn’t very nice, but I kicked their asses haha. I gave them all the chances in the world, making the best trades, but they still managed to land on Cedric Boul. (My secret is having hotels on the oranges, and the purples on the same lane as the oranges… that whole street if you will is the best value :)) And the sad thing about monopoly, is that it isn’t a clear cut victory, it’s a slow process lol. I guess I’m too competitive, even to let girls win. But they still had fun haha. The game probably lasted a couple of hours, and after that, it was time for bed.
The next day, I wanted to go and play golf. I found a very nice golf course called New Plymouth golf club, and it was 50 to play, and 30 to rent clubs. The weather was perfect for golf. It was cloudy, so therefore not too hot, and there was no wind. I’ll tell you right away, I played 92, which isn’t too bad considering I didn’t have my clubs, and that the greens were quick as hell!! I’ve never played on such fast greens. It wa like a carpet. So on the front nine, I shot 49, but there were no triple bogeys, just bogeys and doubles. All the doubles were 3 putts too, because I had to get used to the fast greens. On the back nine though, thing went way better, and I shot 43. I managed only 1 3 putt, and 3 pars I think. I like it now because I figured that I am at a stage where I don’t get worse, even if I don’t play in a while. My swing was still pretty good and accurate. I’ll try to play another game during the week.
That night, I met up with the girls again (Marianne and Robin btw), and we went out for supper at a nice Argentinian restaurant. It was fun talking with canadians, cuz we already have lots in common. It was easy chit chatting, as we talked about travels, and driving on the opposite side, and the complexity of the US election system compared to ours, and lots of other stuff. Time flew by, and the waitress wasn’t in a hurry haha. After 3 hours at the restaurant, we went back to the hostel, and met up with an English couple, and the 5 of us talked throughout the evening. I went to bed at 11:30pm, and had to check out the next morning.
Now, it was friday morning, and the Jack Johnson show is only on sunday, so I asked the office If I could stay for 2 more nights, and of course, it was fully booked. Oh well, I said good bye to the girls, as they were leaving for Palmerston North, and then to Wellington. Then I called a bunch of places, and finally found somewhere with a bed. Its a camping ground, who also has cabins spread around with beds in them. I met up with another Canadian here, from Nova Scotia. He looks pretty young, like 18-19, but he’s a cool kid. There is also a girl from Oklahoma, US, and an other couple from England. We all happen to be going to see the show on Sunday, so we might all go together. Friday (yesterday), I decided to spend my day at the beach. It’s a beach 5 minutes out of New Plymouth, called Fitzroy Beach. It has some nice surf there, and I actually might do that later today, I’ll tell you in part 2. The sand was all black sand, which I found pretty cool. The water temperature wasn’t too bad either, I saw some ppl surfing without a wetsuit. I think it was around 70-75 or something. It was nice to swim in the ocean again. Last time I did that was in Costa Rica!
Oh one last ting before I go, yesterday night, the stupidest thing happened. I wanted to go to town for a beer and maybe shoot some pool. So I walk from the hostel to the city, which took about 20 minutes. I go in this Irish pub, and it had lots of ppl watching a rugby game on tv. I go to the bar for a beer, and the bartender shows me this sign that says “Food must be purchased before alcohol is served”. That in itself is a pretty stupid rule, but I can understand, maybe it’s because of the game or something, or maybe cuz it was good friday. Anyways so I think that I could do with a plate of fries and a Guiness, but then, the bartender tells me that the kitchen is closed… So he can’t give me fries, therefore can’t give me beer. Isn’t that the stupidest thing you’ve ever heard??? I don’t care if it’s good friday or freakin Christmas!! It was only 9pm too! On a friday night! In Qc, if you go to a Cage, with a Habs game on, you’ll never have problem ordering food, much less beer! This was the stupidest thing I’ve ever seen! Anyways lol I was pissed off so went back to my hostel, and went to bed. I didn’t want to take the time to find anothe bar, just so they would tell me the same thing.
So here I am now, it’s 11am on saturday, and I’m either going to try to surf later on, or maybe go golfing. We’ll see. I am checking out of here tomorow morning, and then packing everything in my car and waiting in line to get to the show. I don’t know how early I’ll have to get there, but as I said before, I don’t have anything better to do all day lol. Then sunday night, I think I’ll drive back down, or sleep in my car or something. I’ll still have monday and tuesday off, so I might still stop somehwere else to play golf, or find something else to do, we’ll see!

Hey!
Bye!
